York Road Retention Basin Project

The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) will restore the stream and direct more flow into the two basins located to the west of York Road, adjacent to Applewood Drive and Cedarwood Drive and the Cedar Estates community. This project is expected to begin in the spring of 2026 and last most of the year.

Applewood Culvert Replacement, Wildwood stub projects

NEORSD in partnership with the City of North Royalton will replace the culvert that runs parallel to Applewood Drive in Cedar Estates. The short bit of pavement that runs off the northern end of Wildwood Drive will be used to access the culvert replacement project and then be removed. These projects are still in the planning stage and will likely start in mid-2026. Look for additional updates and information on these projects as plans, start and finish dates are finalized.

Albion Road housing construction project – brief update

The site of the former Albion Road Elementary School remains in the planning stage. Grey Fox Capital continues to work with the Engineering and Planning departments to create an acceptable site plan that accommodates the water and the inclines associated with the property. At this time, the Grey Fox has not submitted for final site approval, as they are continuing to work through the site constraints and related design challenges. I’ll provide updates as they are available, as this project is of great interest to residents that live downhill, downstream, and adjacent to this property.

Comments on plowing, mailbox replacement and snow removal.

Today, Sunday, 1 February, I toured all of the streets of Ward 1 to assess conditions and the results of snow removal.

Specifically, I was assessing four conditions:

  • Snow cleared by the city allows access to all driveways and streets;
  • Driveways serviced by private contractors are cleared without obstructing any utilities, road access, or adjacent property;
  • Mailboxes that may have been damaged by plowing;
  • Sidewalks and commercial spaces cleared by private owners.

It appears to me that all of the cul de sacs and dead ends have been plowed. Compared to some other municipalities, Ward 1 streets looked well-attended, and I credit the hard work of the Service Department with maintaining our roads during this difficult winter weather. It’s clear that residents adhered to the street parking bans, allowing the plows to work unimpeded. There are several instances of hydrants being somewhat obscured, but all are visible should safety services need to respond to any incident requiring hydrant access. I was grateful that all of the properties serviced by private contractors appeared to me to have piled the snow in a way that does not obstruct anything. For any resident with a mailbox damaged by city snow removal, please contact the Service Department at 440-582-3002.

With respect to the clearing of sidewalks, while I saw many places where residents stepped up and ran snowblowers and shovels down the walks, I regret that Ward 1 has much room for improvement on keeping sidewalks clear. I’ll be conferring with the city to determine proper jurisdiction over sidewalk maintenance by private residents and businesses to determine how to best communicate and set expectations that sidewalk snow removal is the responsibility of the property owner. We almost halfway through the winter season, and more snow is likely. I appreciate the input from residents who raised this topic, and I very much appreciate the residents that not only took care of their own property, but stepped up to go above and beyond and help clear sidewalks for neighbors. If you took the time to clear your sidewalks and your neighbors walks, and dig out the hydrants, thank you!
