Mayor’s Message on the city salt supply
The recent thaw and sunny days may be putting to rest any thoughts of more winter weather behind us, and I am very happy to think about spring instead of the groundhog seeing his shadow. Our last blast of winter raised some inquiries about the city salt supply, and while we are good for now, I appreciated the additional information in the Mayor’s message:
UPDATE ON SALT SITUATION-ADDITION OF SECOND SALT BARN:
The region is still experiencing a delay in salt deliveries from Cargill. As we shared last month, our City placed an order for 1,000 tons with Cargill on Jan. 15 and received just a third of that order. We received the remainder, our last delivery of salt, on Feb. 2. We placed an additional order for 1,000 tons, on Feb. 2, which remains undelivered. When we placed that order, Cargill was backlogged with orders a full month. Our Service Department has been in communication with Cargill requesting salt and Cargill told our department today a delivery will arrive this week, but we do not know the amount we will be given. Because of this situation, we are still conserving the salt we have for hills, curves and intersections on main routes and hills in developments. Our crews have been out plowing and will continue to do so to keep the roads as passable as possible. Please understand we must conserve our supply and any future shipments because we are unsure how long the production delays will continue. Salt shortages were a non-issue until recently. Many may recall a similar situation impacted the region last February, though not to this extent. For this reason, Mayor Larry Antoskiewicz has announced his plan to add a second salt barn to address this concern long-term, which was discussed by Service Director Nick Cinquepalmi at the Feb. 3 Streets Committee meeting. Cinquepalmi said this December was the worst the City has experienced, using five times the amount of salt used in years past, and that the City needs the ability to house more. It was announced at that meeting that Cinquepalmi has been directed by the Mayor to pursue costs for a new barn. Service has actively been obtaining quotes this month for a 3,000-ton salt shed.
“The salt production delays were never an issue for our City. It’s a fairly new problem, but because it has happened two years in a row now, we must make corrections on our end to try to prevent this from happening a third time,” the Mayor said. “We will add the second barn and stock up prior to winter, when the weather is mild and the demand low. I know that doesn’t solve our issue today, but we are looking at ways to prevent this in the future.”
Reminder: Please report your damaged mailbox to the Service Department
From the Service Department page on the City web site,
The City will repair mailboxes, if damaged by City snow plow operations. If your mailbox is damaged by City snow plowing, contact the Service Department at 440-582-3002.
The Service Department will come out as soon as possible to repair or replace mailboxes. If minor damage has occurred, we will repair your current mailbox. If your mailbox and/or post needs to be completely replaced the City will install either a standard metal mailbox and/or wood post or a Step2 mailbox. We do not have a reimbursement program.
